Living Exercises 09-11

An on going project consisting of a hand-made book of written performance instructions and DVD documentation of the performances. The exercises are personal and social experiments designed to broaden ones perspective on various aspects of life. The exercises range from the ritualistic and the introspective, to ways of reinterpreting rules of social situations.

Lost and Find Yourself Flyer Quick Preview (Full-Length Video Below)

Take a picture of yourself and make a lost persons flyer with the photo. With flyer, ask strangers on the street if they recognize the person on the flyer. If they recognize that it is you on the flyer, ask them to help you find yourself.



Hold Hands With A Stranger & Line Surfing Quick Preview (Full-Length Video Below)

Hold Hands With A Stranger: In the city ask a stranger walking down the street if you can hold their hand for only one block. At the end of the block ask if they would like to continue for one more block. Ask again at the end of every block until they decline. Finished when no longer holding hands.

Line Surfing: Find a long line of people waiting, such as a line in a super market, post office or store. Wait in line. When someone gets in line behind you let him or her go in front of you. Finished when you are the only person in line.

Ten-Minute Communal Solitude and Silence

With a relative or friend, lie next to each other in silence for 10 minutes. Then, make a sandwich together, then cut it down the middle and each eat one of the halves. Finished when sandwich is eaten.

Go to a clothing department store and cut quarter size holes in the pockets of pairs of pants or trousers.

Note: Cut only one hole in one pocket of each pair; leaving it up to fate to play roulette with each possible donation.
